Stress Symptoms
Stress is a normal bodily response to some circumstances wherein we feel threatened. Our bodies go into full alert mode, pumping more blood to our muscles, our hearts racing, and, we don’t even realize it, but we hold our breath for that right moment that we need to exert the effort to either sprint or fight. Stress actually does us good, since we go into that mode where we can do things that we normally can’t. This bodily reaction where we receive certain amounts of adrenalin, is known as the stress response; also called the fight or flight reaction.
The stress response is like an emergency switch, however, thus is only to be used under extreme circumstances. As human beings, we have the capability to adapt to the situations new to us. When that emergency switch is turned on, our bodies respond so as for us to cope with or keep up with that situation. It is for us to adapt and learn from that situation so the emergency switch isn’t used that frequently. Most times, though, we fail to adapt or the circumstances are just too much for us. This usually happens often in the workplace.
In the workplace, we often usually consider our workload as threats. When we receive our workload and we start thinking that we can’t do all of those by the end of the workday, our bodies go on that emergency mode. We accomplish everything before day’s end, and we go home fatigued. By the next day, when we face the same workload, the body responds again. The same thing happens the next day, and the next day, and the next day. Our bodies are taking the toll on the everyday emergency situation. While it is still doing its job by helping us cope, it begins to break. When it does, we feel the symptoms of stress.
In this scenario, when the body responds the same way every single day we’re at work, we are likely to feel more and more exhausted by the time we get home. Other symptoms of stress include loss of focus, headaches, inability to make rational decisions, chest pains, agitation, and dizziness. Stress is not just about work, it can also be caused by relationships. You will see someone being stress out due to breaking or straining of relationships. After a breakup, for instance, some people may lose sleep over, lose appetite over it, or turn to alcoholism.
Stress is a natural response to threat. Although it is healthy, too much of it can bring physical and mental problems. The effects of stress can lead to a number of disorders. Irritability and moodiness can lead to anger management issues. Too much being in the fight or flight reaction can lead us to be constantly overly anxious – a possibility of developing anxiety disorder. Stress signs and symptoms are your body’s way of telling you that you are going beyond your capacity.
