Types of Procrastinators
The Relaxed Type
If you are a student who abandons schoolwork but is very active with your social life, then you may fall under this category. Or you may be an employee who is negligent with your duties at work but is very much active at the ‘after five’ parties.
The relaxed procrastinator tends to view his/her responsibilities negatively, avoiding them while putting his/her attention and energy into other activities. This is mainly a denial on the part of the procrastinator. Consequently, people falling under this category don’t go seeking out for help or solution to the problem. Procrastinators of this type also find it hard to defer gratification. They seem to have failed to renounce Freud’s so-called ‘pleasure principle’.
The Genius Procrastinator
The genius procrastinator falls under the relaxed type. The big difference is that the genius procrastinator does care about the task, but delay doing it anyway. But the genius procrastinator works well under pressure and gives impressive results even when minimal efforts are given to the task (at the last minute at that).
The genius procrastinator often encounters problems when he/she is given a task without a specific deadline. The work tends to lag as they keep putting off its accomplishment. And worse problems come when they are faced with tasks they are not very skilled at, transforming them into the tense-afraid type of procrastinator.
The Tense-Afraid Type
The tense-afraid type is in for serious problems. People falling under this category often tell themselves that they have to be ‘in the zone’ to perform effectively. They would usually convince themselves that they have to relax for the moment and complete the task at a later time, so they can start afresh. This results to a cycle of unaccomplished tasks, causing a build-up of stress and tension.
The procrastinator of this type tends to be overwhelmed bypressure, unsure of his/her goals, unrealistic about time and is generally plagued with negative feelings.
